Man, my Vulcan is a newbie here. It only has 64K miles on it. AX4S trans-axle is a bit jerky into gear, but oh well. Vulcans don't die, and that's the truth.

On my 1993 Aerostar, there was 165, 000 on the *ORIGINAL* engine, then I started driving it and spun a rod bearing on #6...oops. My old man gave me hell for it too but then I found him a new one with 152, 000 on it...runs better than anything else on or in the van.

Miles on 3.0

My engine had 230,000 miles on it before I was given in out of a 1988 aerostar, before I started my (2nd) replacement project it clocked about 275,000 and would still break my 235/45/r17s. But the rear main is starting to drop oil, and I want to play with the power plant, so I bought a new OEM engine, but for normal use a new rear main seal is all my engine would have needed. -Jake

My dad took his 93 3.0 to ~240k miles, and that was stop and go L.A. traffic too. He gave it to my cousin in 98 who drove it beyond ~340K and then sold it... Replaced the clutch in it once, and changed the oil... Also had an 86' 2.9 that went well past ~350K miles... Had a Probe GT that made it to ~140K and dropped the transmission, ran to ~215K and dropped another tranny... Finally died at ~279K when a Powerstrokin' F350 decided to take it's lane...

I've got 241,000 miles on my '91 Ranger. I bought it new in '91 with 39 miles on it. Never touched the motor, but I have replaced the clutch 1 time. Overall, I've spent less than $1200 on repairs, that weren't just normal wear items. I trust it more than the other 2 newer trucks that I have. If you change fluids and filters regularly, there's no telling how long it'll last!

77,000 on my '98 3.0L. Just got a blown intake manifold gasket, bad water pump , bad rear axle seals and the accumulator for the a/c is rusted out.

And that on a truck that is maintained to the letter of the owner's manual. Replacing most items before they are due, driving with a light foot, maximum of 4000 miles between oil changes, 3rd pcv valve, never towed or hauled anything and I've worked graveyards for the last 5 years...meaning she never sees the heat of the day or stop/go traffic.

I have a 3.0 in my Taurus and it has set a very high level for reliability for me. Only problems I have had was it used to RARELY start bucking and die in summer heat...but wait 5 or 10 minutes and it would go off just fine. Second is currently what has occured - the car won't idle now. It will start and I can hold my foot on the gas and keep it running, but at 0 throttle it won't idle, it just hiccups and dies. Otherwise..150K or so and it was good up till then. Transmission on the other hand...::mutters::

Saurian,
You might have the Idle Air Control Valve cleaned or replaced. My '97 F-150 did the exact same thing. I bought some throttle body cleaner at the parts store, and cleaned it myself Problem fixed!

125 K on a 94 Ranger 3.0. Engine runs fine, transmission is starting to go because the fluid was NEVER changed until about 100K. Getting ready to tow a trailer from Nashville to San Francisco, wish me luck!
