I'm thinking of rebuilding the drivetrain in a 4wd 89'F250. Should I buy rebuilt tranny and transfer case or rebuild the old ones? The tranny is leaking pretty bad but shifts fine. The transfer case hums when the hubs are locked but not in 4wd, sounds like a bearing noise. Should I just replace it with a rebuilt one, since I'm pulling the motor anyway? The truck has 140,000 but I love it and don't want a truck payment. I was thinking of doing the work myself but the only real experience is a few years turning wrenches and rebuilding an old Blazer. How hard would it be to do the part swapping? Any input would help.
Thanks
My experience.
I have a 89 F250 4X4 that I bought new in 89. I have done all the work on this truck myself. A few things that I have learned.
1. If the tranny shifts good but is just leaking simply find the leaks and fix them. A full tranny rebuild with a shift kit is about $1500.00.
2. MAKE SURE not to get dirt in the tranny cooling lines when you take things apart. Any little bit of contamination in these lines will destroy the tranny in no time at all.
3. The transfer case is not to complicated at all. The noise you hear might just be a warn out chain. They are simple to take apart and inspect. (Get a good book on them tho)
4. Also the noise might be coming from the front axle. (Ring and pinion gears)
5. I prefer to pull the engine without pulling the tranny at the same time.
6. The hardest thing that I ran in to when pulling the engine was getting the fuel lines off. Get a good set of spring connector wrenches or whatever they call them for the fuel lines
with only 140,000 miles on the drive train I doubt the humming is comming from the transfer case (unless it has been ran dry before). 9 times out of 10 the humming is comming from your U-Joints!
The chain in the transfer case is pretty heavy duty and usually does not wear out unless it has been abused extensivly
Thanks for the info. Put on the coveralls today and got dirty just pokin around to see what I was up against. Looks doable. I'm goin for it.The transfer case looks solid(no leaks), so I agree, I'll leave it alone and save some dough. Just was thinkin PMaint. Top o tranny(manual) leakin like a sieve and front end (IFS). Front end looks trivial enough. Seal at drive shaft, but all those U-joints look scary and feel weak.I'm going to order the motor tomarrow. Should I just go for the stock 302 w/70,000 mile warranty or should I order somthin modified for more horses? I'm looking for reliability w/ gas mileage. As soon as I find the digital camara I think I'll post photo. Any ideas? Is there something I'd be stupid not to do?
Any advice is good.
Thanks
