I just got done replacing the ball joints in my 1990 F150 4x4. I greased everything yet now I am stuck trying to get the axle into the boot and into place. I know that I have to be careful not to damage anything but is there anything I can do to make this easier?
My manual did mention about "keyed splines" during installation. Right now it is partway into the boot. Partway as in if you looked at it from the side the splines are barely sticking out. Would I have to lift up the axle at the same time while putting it in to get the splines together?

Yea it has to be pretty straight to go in, if much of an angle at all it will stop you from sliding the two together.
When you have it indexed correctly and straight in line with each other it will slide right in without any trouble, what I mean is you can easily push it in by hand.
"In phase" will either be dead on or 180deg out, won't go one way rotate the outer axle shaft half a turn and try again.
You can tell just by looking at the inner and outer u joints to know if you have them in phase or not, has to be perfect so set the inner parallel to the ground then rotate the outer joint until parallel to the ground. Then line them up straight in line with one another and push it in, if won't go rotate the outer shaft half a turn and try again, it will go together in one of those two positions. It will not go together in any other orientation.
