49 Ford F1 - Progress Update

Fresh off the tow truck

Dismantling - had to get creative since it was primarily a one man show

Frame in decent shape but had original trans-x member missing and a few areas that needed repair

Only modern upgrade - disc brakes - all new springs - lowered in the rear (3inch), shocks, swapped to dana 44,dropped axle (3inch?),

78-7006 3 Speed Tranny rebuilt by Al Zannino

Challenge with flywheel, it was Merc 6 hole pattern, got it redrilled to match the PP and 10 inch disc.

Stock Flathead rebuilt by Karl's machine shop at 1/2 price of local popular speed shops. Karl has been at same location 30 years and knows his stuff.

Nothing just bolts in, picked up rebuilt generator w/ wrong pulley size (fixed_,swapped to 6 blade fan thanks to Larry, rebuilt 94 Ford Carb...waiting on funds to finish engine :-) then on to cab, steering, etc.

Good to see a stock build! I'm afraid many folks get scared off by the high prices quoted by the "big name" shops, when back in the day, every corner machine shop banged these out.

Your making good progress, and very nicely done too. It's kind of ironic that most present day mechanics understand the complex systems that make up a new car, but don't have a clue when it comes to the simple designs of 60 years ago. Thanks for sharing your progress, I never get tired of watching.

I'm finding that many of the older shops that are still around know their stuff and charge a reasonable prices. Its really a matter of finding them. There are several speed shops around in Southern California that charge an arm and leg for things because their name recognition. Of course I can't afford them and I've enjoyed time building it slowly and having my kids help out every once in awhile. They've learned quite a bit along with myself.

I installed the equalizer shaft and ball and bracket with a new bushing, spring and a thick rubber gasket. The diameter of the whole on the rubber gasket is exactly the size of the spring so I assume it provides support alignment for the spring at the bottom of the shaft but something doesn't seem right. I greased up the shaft through the zerk and noticed the grease around the bushing spilling out. Is this by design or does the rubber gasket go around the ball and bracket so to provide some type of seal? The diameter of the gasket is much smaller than ball so Im nervous to force the rubber gasket over the ball and tear it.

I believe the rubber gets stretched over the ball, seals the end of the tube.

That sounds logical. I will try it tonight.

I love the way the original wires looked without the boots on these trucks but questioning whether Im compromising functionality. These seem to slip right off the plug

I was originally thinking of going with the Merc setup but decided to stick with the 94 Carb. Interesting the block which came from an F1 had a log of Merc parts down to the oil stick (8CM).

Rookie mistake, I bought a rebuilt generator forgetting to check on the pulley belt width. Luckily I had the old one so I swapped the pulleys.

Inside the 3 speed top loader... I just have to remember to put fluid before starting it :-)

I got lucky and obtained another 3 speed for almost nothing with block that I bought. I appears to be in good condition. Saving it since I'm expecting my 15 year to be grinding some gears.

That trans looks great! Did you replace the blocker rings and bearings?

The Rochester 2G series carbs used on GM engines from '57 - '64 are a direct bolt-on to the Merc intake manifold. It's an excellent carb, a much more modern design than 94's. I'm running one off a '63 Chev 283, haven't had to touch it since I put it on, and it doesn't have power valve issues like 94's.

Those exposed plug connectors are a PITA IMO, if you are working on the engine with it running (tuning carb, whatever). Just too easy to lay your arm across one or more - YIKES!

Yes, the rings and bearings were replaced. I would say its pretty much like a new tranny.

I will run the 94 on this flatty but hope to start a new build as soon as I finish this F1 and do more updates/upgrades on my next one.

I hear ya and why Im rethinking it. I can't imagine the truck stalling somewhere on the road, asking someone to crank the engine will Im under the hood with a long screwdriver and arm sliding by those plugs

Finally the generator, fan and belts are in after much struggle will belt sizes, broken intake bracket guides.

Also re-cored (4 cores) radiator, pipes and hoses installed.

Most of the body has been blasted and DTM primer applied.

Overall in decent shape other than typical rot spots.

Next step will be to figure the under cab coating before mounting on the frame.
