3.0 compatibility

I have a lead on a reman 3.0 long block for $399!!! But, it's spec'd for 86-88 models. My question, is anything compatible w/my 92? It's listed as an Aero rwd engine, I know the fwd's are substantially different.

The 86 V6 was a 2.8. From 87 to 97 the V6 was the 3.0 or the 4.0 from 90 to 97.

Pretty sure all 4WD had the 4.0.
There must have been some subtle changes in the 3.0 over the years. For instance my 87 3.0 doesn't have an EGR valve but my 97 3.0 does.

You can find the Doug Anderson article, with pics, over at TheRangerStation.
It deals primarily with internal differences relevant to a rebuild shop, that want mix parts and minimize in-process and finished inventory.

Ford Ranger II 3.0 liter Engines

On the other hand, an installer is going to be mostly interested in whether a particular mounting point is present or not, whether its threaded or not, etc. As an example I had to educate a national rebuild shop on a accessory mount point that was either present or not, depending on whether the (otherwise) exact engine was for rwd or fwd apps. They then had to open up a new catalog number to document the split.

And at $399 you should replace the word "reman" with "salvaged" or "recycled".

Thanks! That chart tells me about all I need to know. According to the seller, it was dead stock in a warehouse, they buy surplus lots at cheap prices.

The changes I'm aware of from the earlier 3.0 to the later ones were a switch from MAP to mass air, and better pistons/connecting rods/bearings in later years. Couldn't cite the source, but I've looked into it myself as the '88 3.0 in my van is similar, but not entirely the same as the 3.0 I had in a '92 Tempo. Personally, I wouldn't want to swap for an older model engine.
