Yes I got quick question someone said if you have your hubs locked in and drive like that all the time with or without 4x4 engaged it uses more fuel that true?
Mine is 2005 I can lock my hubs from outside but shift it in using floor shifter to engage but I always leave my hubs locked in and only put in 4x4 where it's needed.
This bad?
you will use some extra fuel because you have more drag from the front end turning all the time, but when driving in 2wd with the hubs locked I don't think the mileage loss will be that great.
As far as being bad, it depends on who you talk to. I know people who have trucks that the hubs have been locked in for years and they have not had any parts breakage, but then you talk to people that say you'll wear stuff out faster.
It's not a bad thing. It just means a little extra drag as you will now be turning both front axle shafts and the front driveshaft unneccessarily. Most folks say they save 1 mpg by leaving the hubs unlocked. I've never driven around enough with my hubs locked to know what mpg I would get in comparison.
Good to know I don't use it enough to keep it locked in but honestly I remembered one day then said oh well not hurting anything. A buddy of mine mentioned that comment and it made me think when I have been reading all these threads.
My concern is really would I damage anything and not so much mpg. If it was significant then maybe but I dont worry about mpg when I drive SD.
Suppose I'll unlock I use my 4x4 twice a year due to California weather maybe more in the future when I head North to Washington for a few years but until then......Sorry didn't mean to hijack

One could just as easily say that running with the hubs locked keeps the u-joints from freezing up and the diff gears and bearings lubricated...
I had an experience related to this - I bought a truck year before last that the hubs had been locked in for 188,000 miles. The guy bought it new, and he told me he had never unlocked them. He was telling the truth; it took me quite some effort to get them working again. Anyway, the front axle is slick and quiet and smooth, nothing leaks. I have no idea how much gas mileage it cost him, but the front axle sure seemed to like it.
