Need HELP guys. Here is my carrier bearing. I screwed up and thought I had the same drive shaft I have been researching on here with the 1 5/16" nut on the end. NOPE not this guy. This is usually how thing go for me on a Saturday. So, HOW do I take this off? My puller is not long enough because of this shaft. If I have to take it to a shop to get this done, it's going to have to wait for another day. I just have too much other stuff going on today. I was hoping to spend a couple hours doing this and then be done and move on. Anyway, any insight or photos or videos would be great if you all have them. By the way, no videos on you tube that I can find has this drive-shaft.
Well I don't have a press, I wish I did. I don't have a cutter or chisel to get off the old one either. I swear, the tools I have acquired so far have been because of this rig. It looks like I will be acquiring more. I had to put this thing back together today. I will attack it another time and maybe it won't be 18 degrees out next time. I will keep you informed of how it goes.
btw, when you disassemble the two halves of that shaft, be sure and mark them so that you get it clocked correctly upon reassembly.
Yep, sure did. I've had it off before for lubing the spline on that shaft. A cutting torch would be great, but I don't have one of those either. A buddy of mine just told me he has a bearing press, so I'm hoping to get this knocked out next weekend. And hopefully the Spicer part I bought is the correct size.
Cut-off wheel on a die grinder and a hammer/chisel.
Use a piece of pipe the same size as the inner race and hammer the new one on.

They make cut-off wheels that fit grinders too. Your local welding shop should have them in stock. Make sure you have the proper attachments to put them on your grinder. These are worse than grinders with regards to dust and particles flying in the air. Make sure you have a steady hand, safety glasses at a minimum, and leather gloves with long sleve shirt!
Practice on a something if you're not familiar with this tool/cut-off wheel first. You probably won't have to cut completely through the collar to get it off the driveshaft. 2 cuts opposite from each other should be enough to do it. The heat generated from the cutting process may allow it to expand enough to come off.

Good tips CampSpringsJohn. I need to get a new grinder. The angle grinder I had, the motor burned up. It's funny, but where I live there is nothing local. I'm in the middle of freaking no where. We have an O'Riley's and that's about it. I would have to travel 40 to 50 miles to find a welding shop. Not my choice of locations, it's where the military sends me. I do plan on buying more tools for my inventory so I am more prepared to do whatever task may come up. Thanks again for the tips.
Well, just an update. I finally got this carrier bearing taken care of. I did everything I could to take it off all the way. I couldn't get it. I found a place near by and they took the old one off and pressed the new one on for $30. Well worth my $30.
