Ok odd enough that this is, I was driving down the highway and I heard this banging and the truck started shaking like a mad man. So I pulled over and checked it all out, i thought it was a flat tire, but turns out the rubber piece that holds the drive shaft together was burnt to a crisp. Without that rubber fitting, the drive shaft was flopping around.
Apparently the bearing seized and it fried the rubber fitting that holds it together? I've never ever had something like this happen before. Is this pretty easy to fix, or do I have to rip apart the whole driveshaft to install a new bearing and rubber fitting?
I don't think that will be too much. I have only had a drive shaft shortened. My GUESS would be under $200. I could be way off. Let us know how much it costs. I was thinking of having that done just as PrevMaint. How many miles did you have on the truck when it happened?
Good Luck!
Bob
It's called a hanger bearing, the whole unit is available at a local parts store.1) remove rear drive shaft, from Differential end. 2) slide coupling apart, then remove front shaft from trans. 3) the old bearing remains are pressed off or hammered off.4)
press on new bearing assy. 5)remove the hanger bearing hardware from cross member 6) reassemble in reverse order. or have it done, depending on your mechanical ability
Good luck Phil
I unhooked the shaft at the universal joint for the diff and the trans. There are bolts on the Universal joint itself. You will see them if you look close. I think you have to be carefull not to let the round caps fall out of the center of the universal. I then put both shaft pieces (still connected) into my Honda Civic and brought it to the shaft shop.
Agemenon........ First thing you do is mark all the parts for alignment before removal.....and I mean all. I would get all the universals replaced and the center bearing.... find a good machine shop....... get the HDuty universals with grease fittings. They will press the old bearing off and the new one on...... I took mine in and had all that done...... I think the total was around $150 cdn....... in Mjaw Sask.
the howl was probobly the center bearing sizing up its not realy that hard to do your self just do like soup264 said i use a cast iron pipe that is the same size as the bearing race and just tap it on with a hammer wokes graet just did mine 15,000 km. ago

what do you mean by mark all the parts for alignment? I should just get all universal joints, and keep the shafts themselves or what? I don't get it.
