I got a Advanced auto parts which is where I mostly go because online discounts and stuff. Got a Napa not too far away same goes for a Autozone I had to buy some stuff from.
I have been known to screw the nuts back on then use a jack under the nuts (with a wood block between the two) Go up with the jack and let the weight of the truck do the work. Sometimes a tap with a hammer on the steering knuckle is required to shock it into submission. Just make sure you have it properly supported on jackstands.
Well everything is off. Had a hassle with the tie rod but my one relative had a pickle fork I could barrow. Took a lot to get the upper and lower ball joint nuts off. Thing is now the nuts are off and the knuckle just sits there. It is getting dark now so I can't do much more.
I have always been able to get the spindle off using a plastic dead blow hammer. Use plenty of anti-seize when you put it back together and you shouldn't have any problem getting it apart the next time.
If I remember correctly, the last time I did ball joints I used a BFH to break the knuckle loose. Same method as used for tie rod ends. The camber adjustment sleeve was the part that was keeping things stuck together.
I got a well sized soft hammer I been using the pound stuff out. I say soft cause pounding around where the tie rod goes in left a impression on the face of the hammer. It isn't a claw or ball peen hammer either.
If that's the case you are using the wrong hammer. I use a 2# hammer to break tie rod ends loose. Unless I am replacing the end and then I'll use a pickle fork.
Well it was all I had when I was doing this. That or a claw hammer which I would rather not use. It worked at least. The ball joints are the only big things I need to take apart and replace for inspection.
Well rented a pickle fork kit to remove the ball joints. That, my uncle, and a thick piece of brass which I don't know why he has.... and a well sided sledge he found in the corner of his garage. We got the ball joints out. We just can't get them pressed out. He knows someone who is all about cars and stuff so he is going to help with that. After that just got to put everything together, grease stuff up, and then tighten everything to what my Haynes manual says.
