Question CV Boot Replacement

2001 F150 4x4 has a torn cv boot on the outer left. I have the shaft out and and the boot retaining rings off but can't, for the life of me, see how to get the axle out of the joint. Does anyone...anyone know how to accomplish this? There doen't seem to be a circlip that is visible. After the parts guy ordered both boots for $35.00 he said, "I can get you a remaned half shaft for $90.00, by the way, no return on ordered parts." Gee, thinks buddy, didn't you say you were once a rocket scientist? Maybe I should order it then pummel him with it.

CV Boot Replacement

most car CV's have a half ring that slides into a groove about half way between where you can see and the actual join. that's why some people wack it off with a hammer. the ring normally needs replacing and comes with the kit. As for truck's I don't know if they work on the same principle. must be. it's locked in pretty good, and needs significant force to "break" loose......hope this helps.

CV Boot Replacement

I had to reposition my vise on the work bench so the shaft would hang vertically and not the edge of the bench. I whacked it few times with a mallet and it came right off. Thanks for the info.
