I know every post starts with a title like this, but I am in need of some help to get my 66 back on the road.
I have my truck at a mechanics trying to fit a c4 trans to my 302. The problem.....we can't figure out what torque convertor or flywheel to use.
The c4 is dated a 1974 and the 302 is a 79 model. Mechanic checked the serial numbers. Don't know what size the bell housing is. It's not a full circle, the bottom is open.
We tried the parts stores, but they only know what the computers tell them. I'm hoping if someone has done this same conversion can help.
The flexplate needs to be for the '79 302 block, that should be easy. There are however several different bell housing sizes used on the C4, they are removable from the transmission itself. What have you tried and why didn't it fit?
Well the first converter was too big, it rubbed the inside of the bell when pushed all the way on. Plus the correct flexplate will not bolt to any of the converters. Note: this is what my mechanic is telling me.
There are at least two different converter bolt patterns, but if it hits the bell, then you likely have the small bell and a large converter. I will have to find my notes, tomorrow maybe. Check the starter alignment that also needs to match up with the flex plate and bell.
