i have a 2006 f150 Fx4 5.4L with 106,000k.
ill be doing it myself. should i replace the hoses and thermostat now or wait till later? what is the best and easiest way to drain the coolant? should i drain it by the peck **** or by the lower hose? if i drain from the peck ****, what size hose and how ling should i buy?
Your hoses and thermostat are basically ten years old. New ones are inexpensive, so yes, it's cheap insurance.
Drain from the lower hose. Using the petcock will take forever, if it works at all.
On a cold engine, take the lower hose off the radiator, then go up and remove the cap on the surge tank. Take the upper hose off the radiator too. You should get a rapid emptying of the system. Replace hoses but leave the upper one disconnected from the radiator unless you have a radiator cap you can remove to vent. Mix your new coolant with distilled water and add it at the surge tank. If the upper hose or the radiator gets full, connect the upper hose. Now with everything reconnected and coolant in the surge tank and the cap tight, you can start the process of watching the surge tank for a few days and keep refilling it on a cold engine until it stabilizes, which is when all the air should be out of the system.
This method will not get all the coolant but will get most of it.
