You will want to keep your 1980 wiring. Concerning the physical column, 1980 to the early 90s - 'til whenever they started with those stalk-mounted multi-function levers, those things won't work but stuff prior should.

What engine do you have? I think I would look for a AOD. Overdrive is very nice to have. If you have a 300 or 302 and just use your truck for minor hauling and occasional light towing, the AOD should hold up fine, and your fuel mileage should go up a couple mpg over the 4 speed(if it was the granny 4 speed). If you had one of the overdrive 4 speeds, your mileage will go down and your rpms will go up with the c6.

The only thing you need to watch for on the AOD is the throttle cable for the tranny. Lokar makes a universal fit cable for the AOD.

!980-86 are all directly interchangeable. There are differences in the 87-91, but may be direct also. I was thinking plastic shroud to dash is not the same, but would have to confirm for sure. In 1980 the 2wd trucks still came with a C4, unless you have a 351M/400 motor. Better mileage over C6, but a late 80's, like 88-91 range, AOD would be a nice choice. It can handle anything a half ton truck will throw at it. The stock linkage for an AOD in 1983-85 will work to do your conversion. A little more info on your truck would yeild more specifics.

If you have just the base model F100, I assume its a 302 or I6. The 302 would have a C4, but all the 300 engines came with a C6. Either way the F100 in 1980 was on the light duty side. Some even came with 14" wheels. A C6 kills any decent gas mileage at all. If you have the light duty 4 speed, it may be one with 4th overdrive. If so anything you change over to will drop your fuel mileage.
