First off, any AOD transmissions out there you want to get rid of...?
An AOD compared to a C6, what 's the difference other than the overdrive?
If I cant find an AOD I can get a C6, but, will it use the same mounts?
I noticed it has a vacuum mod on it also..
Oh yeah, it's bolting up to a 300 six.

Reason: forgot
I've not owned an AOD, so take this with a pound of salt. But, from what I've read a stock AOD is not as stout as a C6. Maybe the problems are due to it being really finicky with the adjustment of its kickdown cable, which if not done correctly can burn it out.
And, the OD ratio is .67:1 so you don't want to use it unless you are on the highway, and not if you are towing. That is a really tall ratio and even with 3.50 gears you'll only be turning ~1750 at 65 MPH. I wouldn't think a 302 would do well with that low of R's, although a 300 six should love it. Might be a good combo for MPG.
C6 is a heavier duty trans by order of magnitude. It also has a huge aftermarket following and you can build the crap out of them. The early AODs were pretty light duty and as mentioned above the throttle valve cable adjustment is critical. There is not much aftermarket available for the early AODs. They are also much lighter than a C6.
Well, Today I found an '85 302 with an AOD bolted to it, the combo is cheaper than the c6, so I'm getting it for the trans. No, I'm not going to be towing much, it'll work.
Make for sure you set up the kickdown linkage correctly. I don't know what the procedure is and my manuals don't include AOD's as they came out later. But, find out and adhere to it strictly.
To set the kickdown, the correct way is to go by pressures. There's a specific way of doing it with a gauge to get certain readings at certain ports. It can be done by "winging" it and some, as I, have gotten it doing it that way.
The first thing that usually goes is the overdrive clutch pack. Shifting too hard into od, or towing too heavy of loads in od will certainly do it. The first/reverse clutch pack is almost half the size of a C-6. The intermediate packs are about the same size, maybe just a little smaller.
I've rebuilt them both and the aod is a royal pita compared to the c-6, but the aod can be built pretty stout. There's a lot of companies that have kits to make them extremely tough. Just for starters, a set of Raybestos Blues and kevlar bands really help, along with a good shift programmer, not that b&m crap shift kit. Transgo is the way to go.
