hey y'all how ya doing .... heres the question/delima I have a 82
F-100 302 stock as far as I know with a AOD tranny I have put 2 trannys so far into the truck and needs another which is sad anyway LOL but I am considering going to a C-4..C-5 or a C-6 but I was told today by a guy who would put another one in for me at a good price according to his computer from all data that only a AOD will work in place now I know Ford used these trannys in the same application my question is this what is involded changeing it out with these other trannys I know a AOD is 32 inches from front bell housing to the end of that tailshaft... will any of these be a straight bolt up if not what do I need to change
Godbless and Thanks

A c-6 is your best bet i think it will be the right lenth but if it isn't it shouldn't be too hard to find a 302 or 351W truck in the salvage yard that will have the driveshaft you will need. I would definitely go with the C-6 over the other choices.

C-6 is strongest.
Here are the points I would watch out for:

Shaft length, and the number of splines inside the yoke that goes into the tranny tail housing.
If they are different, you may only need the yoke itself from the donor vehicle. The U-Joints should be the same.

If the shaft is a different length - take the whole driveshaft from the donor truck, and swap out the REAR yoke.

The tranny cross member may be different, and/or the tranny mount. You can get away with drilling new bolt holes sometimes, but I'm a strong believer in having the right parts in the first place.

The torque convertor should be interchangeable, but now is a good time to scope out stall speed, and advices on the best TQ for a C-6 in this application.

Best of luck, man!

Thanks for The replys.. I am considering a C-6 strongly but I want the least trouble converting this over as time is something I need to consider now if the shafts are a different length could I take the rear shaft off of the AOd and mount onto the Other tranny would they interchange? Thanks a lot

I don't know about swapping tailshafts between the different trannys. I just want to add my two cents about the types. While it is true that the C-6 is a stronger transmission, the C-4 and C-5 are not by any means weak. Most of your drag cars pushing 500, 600, or even 700 horsepower will use a C-4. I know it's like comparing apples to oranges, since you have a truck, but C-4's and C-5's were offered in trucks more often then the C-6's just before they went to overdrive transmissions, and they are much stronger then the AOD, which was put in thousands of trucks. Another thing to think about. The C-5 is VERY similar to a C-4, but it has a lock-up converter feature. I have one in a 70 F-100 behind a stout 302. It has a shift kit in it, and performs great. Chirps the tires at full throttle while going into second, and shows no signs of slipping or breakage. I also tow with it too. The important thing is to have a transmission cooler. Heat kills automatics. Besides the benefit of me not having to shift, my C-5 actually gets better gas mileage then with the stock 3-speed on the column. I believe that's possible because of the lock-up converter, which was also a feature of your AOD. All I'm trying to say, is that I wouldn't worry about installing any of the 3 transmissions that you mentioned. Go for the one that is in the best shape, and the one that will fit with doing the least work. The other two guys are just telling you what they prefer, which is cool, because that is what this site is all about.
