How can the case crack, but not leak electrolyte? AGM may not leak, I guess but it's going to cause trouble, no?

Inward pressure exerted from the bottom puts pressure on the top, add some vibration and....

squeeze a box of cereal, or crackers... you can see the top flex a little.
