cat wornout??

How do you tell when the Cat is worn out? Is it that pleasing sulfurized skunk smell, or is that just the Cat doing its job? I've got 130 K on a 90 F150 with 300 I6 and just wondering. How much is a replacement? Any tips on which are best?

Either the cat will plug up and you won't get any power or you can take your cat off, shake it, and hear the ceramic rattling around inside. You can get a new cat for as low as $35 bucks, but more than likely, you will have to shell out about $90 bucks for your application. Check out DynoMax for cats, do a search on the net for "catalytic convertors", and check some of the sites out.

Make sure the "rotten eggs" odor is indeed coming from the exhaust. I had a Dodge (sorry) van that I thought had a bad cat due to the odor. One day while under the hood I noticed my battery was HOT to the touch. Well, come to find out, it was a bad voltage regulator that overcharged the battery and literally boiled it to death. The odor was the boiling sulfuric acid. It might be worth a check to see if it is the battery. Good luck.
