After learning that my new 79 300 had some royally messed with wiring, causing my alternator not to charge, no gauges or blower work, but headlights and the thermostat light were functional ( as documented here: ) it was recommended that I do the 3 G install to start from scratch and get a better a system than track down every issue.
I purchased a 130 amp alternator from a 94 mustang. I have my old alternator out and am switching the pulleys. THe mustang pulley is the grooved kind and my old one is the double v kind, with the two belts. This pulley won't fit on the new alternator, the shaft is juuuuuust too short. It seemed like most of the walkthroughs I've read had only one belt pulley.
I found one post where someone asked about switching to the dual belt to eliminate squeal. This leads me to believe that I may have to look for a compatible 3G that also had a dual pulley? Any ideas?
The work to do twin V-Belts, in my opinion, is much worth it to help keep squeal down.
Alternatively, the 4.9L was made until the EFI days, and you could swap to a serpentine belt. The snag would be using the newer water pump as it rotates differently than the V-belts.
I wonder if there is an OEM solution to get the twin v-belts on the 130amp 3G...
I did find one thread where the same quesiton was asked, but it evolved into the serpentine discussion and there wasn't a suggestion of an OEM solution. It kind of seems like patience and a dremel is the way to go tomorrow. Until I get tired of it and take it to someone with a milling machine.
I used a 3g from a Taurus 3.8 efi and changed the pulley to a double V. The double V I also found in a junkyard, off an older Ford. The double V eliminates squeal.
Same weird issue I had man. For whatever reason, my shaft was too short to get a thread going on the nut. I have since ordered the proper pulley. Here is my thread about it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-short-ey.html
The taurus one was long enough for the double pulley I had on there already. The mustang one was not. Tell ya friends!
I've got the new alternator in, and the parts i need from the harness redone. Part of the original issue was my blower and gauges didn't have power, but my headlights worked and the light on the thermostat worked. I found my three prong connector floating in the wind.
I see the empty plug where my two prong connector with the excite wire and the horn wire will go, but in the thread I was looking at it also referred to the three pprong connector plug being under the solenoid. I can't find that plug anywhere, but I ahve plenty of empty electrical connections!
How do I proceed with my modified three prong connector?
Since the three prong connector is now a single wee I imagine I can use a new type of connection. I just have no idea where the plug originally connected since it was never there. I tried to get a picture of where it goes in my original thread, to no avail. Any ideas?
