Hey, i wanting to swap out my c6 trans on my 88 f250 7.3l at 55 im at about 2500rpm and as a student fuel milage is a slight issue, what would be the best manual or auto swap to get my rpm down?
E4od for an auto, zf5 for a manual. It will take a while to recoop the cost of a swap with fuel savings. A cheap commuter car might be a better option.

Your rpm's show you have 4.10 axle gears. If your truck is 2wd then a rear axle swap to 3.55's would be a cheaper way to get your revs down some, but honestly 3.55's AND an overdrive transmission is what will put you in a happy place for fuel economy. 4x4's are a lot more expensive and complicated to re-gear. As stated, if this is all about pinching pennies at the pump, it will be hard to recover your investment. If you plan to keep the truck a long time and you can afford to improve it then sure, trans swap is one of the best things you can do to it.
If MPG is the main goal the regearing and a zf5 would be the best. An e4od will give you overdrive and a locking torque converter, both of which your c6 doesn't have.
How much of you driving is city and how much is hwy? I would suggest doing the savings math before you swap anything. Back when fuel was $4 a gallon I installed a DNE2 and low stall converter in my c6/3.54 combo. With the amount I drive and $4 a gallon it would take me a little over a year to recupe the investment. With the drop in fuel prices, now it is between 2-3 years. I plan on keeping my van for a lot of miles and the noise reduction/gear splitting benefits were also of great value to me.
