I have a 1983 f150 l6 with an C6 transmission. I need to replace my transmission and i was looking at completely switching to a different one altogether. Is this a good idea? If so what would be the best to swap it to?
The C6 is one of the best automatic transmissions ever made, if not THE BEST. So there isn't much anything "better" you can replace it with as far as durability goes.
Are you wanting to stay with an automatic? The options all depend on your needs.
For durability you won't beat your C6, but they fall a bit short on fuel efficiency, mainly if you are driving at high speeds (having no overdrive, or locking torque converter).
That said, I swapped from a C6 to a 4-speed manual transmission & definitely gained some power, but only 1.5 mpg...... I think towing, the fuel gain would be more.
An AOD has OD, & locks up in 3rd & OD......but durability is an ongoing problem - they don't survive heavier towing or hard work, in stock form.
Personally, my advice would be don't install a stock AOD into a truck at all - my F250 originally had one & it was just too delicate.
The later E40D combines OD & better durability, but is computer controlled, & not as trouble-free as the C6.
I agree with Ken. The C6 is as strong as an ox, but it is just as thirsty as an ox as well. So, tell us how you are going to use the truck so we can suggest options.
