On my 77 F100 long bed the tailgate has been stuck latched since I purchased it. When I lift the lever one side releases but the other does not. Any suggestions?
Get one side unlatched and then yank the opposite direction to the one that doesn't unlatch while pulling out. Mine is finicky too. It's funny seeing people try to open it just so I walk up and shift it perfectly.
Same thing happened to my 79. I looked under the handle and one of the linkages had come unlatched from the handle itself. A quick reattach and adjust and some WD40 and it was back to good as new.
Pull the handle and hold it then have your buddy pop the other latch from inside the bed with a flat tip screwdriver. If you are really good you can do it by yourself. lol
I bet the one that will not release, the rod has came out of the mount hole on the handle. Small plastic tab/clip can break then the rod end falls out. Might have to remove the TG all together and tip it completely upside down to get the rod to fall back to where you can see it and get the 90 end back in the handle. And get some new plastic clips to hold it.
Here you go, you can also take the limit straps off (drop the TG to level and then reverse the strap arm bend and raise it back up, they will come off the end piece) and let it go past level, maybe that 1" or 2" ?? lower will let the rod come down? Just do not let it fall onto your bumper.
