Just a couple of quick questions about king pins. If you had then fitted at a car shop / garage, how much were you charged to fit them (if you don't mind me asking)?
And has anyone used the king pins from LMC? Do they need to be machined or are they "fit and play"? Got the Hulk in the shop for king pins fitting and they're telling me $250 for their labor, $85 for machine shop costs and $170 for the king pins themselves. Just ordered the king pins from LMC for $80 and can't help but feel like I'm being screwed?
Get a king sized jar of vaseline. Not to lube the king pins, to lube your.........well you get the idea.
Yeah just been calling round other garages and while one quote was still really high the rest were a LOT less. How hard is it to fit these myself? I'm pretty good mechanically wise but I'd still have to have them reamed right?
Yes they would need reaming. And I have priced reamers on line. They aren't cheap. Probably the biggest part of the job. Possibly can "borrow" one from your parts store?
Ain't that the truth...especially if he goes with LMC. He won't even get a "reach around!"
You know, I'd normally be inclined to agree with you on this one but LMC came in at the cheapest on this one. $83 including delivery.
Just done some phoning about and found a machine shop near me that will ream the new bushings for $55-$75 and if he had to remove old bushings and fit new he can do that but will have to requote me.
Does anyone have a "how to" on replacing these kingpins? Would certainly be appreciated.
Thanks!
I paid $80 for the kingpin kit and then brought the spindles to a machine shop to have the metal bushings reamed for $90.
Ultraranger did his kingpin reaming at home using a fixture loaned to him by a machine shop. .. Ultra typically hangs out with his 69 in the Bump forum.
Man things have gotten high. It seems like I only paid like $25 for kingpins for the 72 I used to own. My Dad worked for Arizona Chemical and they had a reamer that I could use.Of course this was back about 1979. And if I recall correct I used a rosebud tip in an oxy/ac torch and heated the knuckles up and it wasnt that big of a job. I looked at reamers online a few months back when someone on here was asking about them and they started around $80.Guess maybe I am cheap.
