Angry Oil Filter Collapsing

I am having an issue with my 97 Exp. The oil filter keeps collapsing with no reasoning behind it, it seems. It has done it twice within the past month. Has anyone else seem to have had this problem? I am taking it to have the engine flushed tonight, but I still can't find a reason that it would be breaking down.

The oil filter on it now was put on 3 weeks ago, and it is a NAPA oil filter.

Brand shouldn't matter. A filter should never collapse on its own. Sounds like either Gremlins in your engine compartment or some serious vaccuum (suction) going on inside your engine. I've never heard of such a thing.

I agree with buzzard. Never seen this before. Do you have a remote filter location or stock?

Oil Filter Collapsing

Well I will agree that the stupid thing is possessed. I bought it in January this year, it took the dealership 2 months to finally get the check engine light to quit coming on. The next issue was the transmission bolts were broken off in the extension housing. After we got that fixed, this starts happening. The door ajar light comes on and stays on, but I found the post on how to fix that today. And the child safety lock won't turn off.

I believe it is a remote filter location.

This is a long shot, but see if the line going to the remote filter location is crimped or bent restricting flow going in. I still don't think that would allow enough pressure to collapse a filter. But it's worth a shot.

Why would you think this? Not many have converted to a remote type system. If it's stock (unmodified by someone) it is not remote.

I believe that it is remote because the mechanic that replaced the oil filter the last time it collapsed told me it was remote.

That is weird. If it is a remote, then it sounds like the source line to the filter is kincked or plugged somewhat. Whatever the cause you could be starving your engine of lubrication. Good luck and let us know what the fix is.

Agree with peterbilt. What is your mechanic doing replacing a collapsed filter with new and not diagnosing the root of the problem, i.e. kinked line?

You'll be lucky if there's no engine damage.

It's possessed. I don't need a mechanic, I need an exorcist. They told me that it was a very cheap oil filter the first time and that I needed to change the oil and the oil filter. Now they are telling me to call Ford, I called Ford and they said they can't help me.

Anything new? I'm not buying the "cheap" explanation.....why did it do the same thing again?

We are still working on it. I was advised not to have the engine flushed, because although it wouldn't hurt, they might not be able to find the answer to the problem.

I'm just waiting on the mechanic to have the time to take a look at it and see what it is really wrong with it. They should be towing it today.
