I need some help please..I have a 1997 f350 with the 460 engine....this truck is driving me nuts..when engine is cold it runs fine..but when it gets got it just shuts off...when it cools off starts right back up...so far I have replaced the ignition module...Coil..complete.tune.up...fuel pumps..fuel.filter...and this morning a new distributor...hope.that fixes.it...I am stumped..I bought this truck brand new I only use it to pull me fifth wheel and race.car...anyone have any ideas? I am out of ideas...thank you
In a heat related situation it would be useful to douse the usual suspects with a healthy shot of freeze-spray and see if that helps isolate the problem. Ice packs might work too.
Just normal running temp when it shuts off...no spark when it does that... some times if I just shut it off for.a.few minutes like running in to do a errand or something won't start when I try to start it...but if it sits along time will.start back up
I'm sure Dan is playing his cards close to his chest. The symptoms described and confirmation spark is dropping out lead me to believe you have the classic bad PIP aka stator in the distributor. Very common failure mode.
Was that a new distributor you installed? Many rebuilt units have bad PIPs in them.
I just changed distributor this morning...brand new unit from auto zone...already changed ignition module with new one...Coil..brand new...I am hoping it was the distributor........

Yea that's what I was thinking but wanted to hear result of testing done when it wouldn't start to verify it was in fact a no spark condition.
Wasn't much else it could be but its worth a moment to ask rather than assume.
The remote mounted ICMs, I yet to have one fail.
Sounds like hasn't tested it yet with the replacement dizzy, the OP plus new info given in later post.
As you point out it might suffer the same problem but can hope it simply fails to start rather than mirror the issue, make it easy on a guy if its gonna fail, just do it be obvious about it.
It fired up first try after I installed New distributor was installed but havnt driven it much yet...hopefully that was it...I hope so. Truck is driving me nuts
Thanks for the help everyone
..truck seems to be running fine now..now I need to set the timing...anyone have a suggestion on what the timing needs to be set at?
