2001 Fuel Issues?

New batteries. Replaced ICP Sensor and pigtail. Replaced fuel pump. Truck will start run a few minutes start running rough then die. Try to restart and acts like it wants to fire but will not run. Let it sit a few hours and the cycle starts again. Not exactly sure if it's a fuel problem but acts like it. Feeding fuel pump from diesel can to bypass tank in case there was a problem there. This is my 15 year olds first truck and we've worked on it for a week on and off. He really wants it to run soon.

Sometimes an IPR will fail when it gets hot, thus dumping the high pressure oil used to fire the injectors. Next time it fails try hitting the IPR with a couple cups of ice, give it a couple minutes to cool, try again.

Also could monitor the hpop pressure via android phone and Torque app with
ELM327 obdii adapter ELM327 obdii adapter
. If hpop duty cycle and pressure fade off as it stumbles, there's another clue.

Cheap ELM327s do not always work, do some research there. But a way to scan codes is very useful, and many common code readers cannot do the job on the 7.3.

Might want to check the valve cover harnesses ( wires under the valve covers) my guess is the wires are shorting out underneath you can test with an ohm meter before pulling the valve covers off but that's what it sounds like to me

Tell us from the beginning on the truck and what it is doing. Where did the truck come from, how long have you had it and was it running and what does the former owner say about it? Why did you change the ICP? Don't throw parts at it yet and try to stumble on a fix. Have you checked the oil level? These trucks run by oil pressure OPENING the injectors. The truck will hold around 15 qts of oil, if the oil level gets around 8 qts the oil pressure will fall and the injectors will close and fuel starve the truck and it will run rough and die. Parts cost a lot of money and time, so start slow by talking to knowledgeable people here and they will help you trace this down.

With your son being the one to drive it, he should be the one doing most of the research and work. When he puts a lot of sweat and blood into it, he will treat it a lot more as his baby and have more pride in it.

You will end up with a great truck when it is all going.

ICP was replaced because ford mechanic said it was bad. Oil level is good. Basics have been done. This one is pretty technical. Unfortunately don't have a way to test for codes.

But on IPR was off when we got the truck. I put it all back together before we started the truck the first time. This morning I picked up a working used IPR sensor from a mechanic friend of mine and put it on. Same problems still

OBDII readers will not work on these trucks. I have a 'SuperChip' tuner and it is able to read the codes.

I would ohm the under valve cover harnesses they do control your injectors somewhat
