Truck starts fine when cold, although the starter is a bit noisy. As you drive and restart it after it gets warm, it takes longer & longer to catch (5+ sec?). Is this normal?
I've replaced plugs, air filter, and fuel filter, and run fresh gas. It has 130k miles. I only owned it a short while, but before buying had it checked by a mechanic who said the compression & so forth was OK.
A friend of mine says likely sticking fuel injector causing flooding. Sounds problamatic to find & fix.
Hey you 460 owners, any ideas where I should begin on this???
It could be the starter going out, or maybe the fuel pump or clogged fuel line, but as your buddy said, it could be an injector. What kind of fuel mileage are you getting?
I've got the same problem - when I look at starters some are very reasonable and others are 5 times the price.. Since I have headers, will this affect the new starter quickly as well? Are the higher price starters supposed to help prevent this condition from coming back?
PS - I'm reasonably handy but not a mechanic - how hard is a 460 starter to change?
Thanks
Wait a minute people... are you guys misdiagnosing sparkyg's problem?
I don't think he's claiming the starter takes longer to catch - I believe he's claiming it takes longer for the engine to turn over.
If the starter sounds like it is still turning the engine over at the same rate, even if noisy and warm, then how in the heck is it the starter's fault?
The symptom of "Heatsoak" is generally starters which turn over at a slower rate, take longer to engage the flywheel, etc.
Sparkyg needs to better describe his problem. Just exactly what is his meaning of "catch"?
I agree. It sounds more like a fuel pressure or injector problem. It could even be that the tempearture sensor is bad and the computer thinks the engine is cold all the time. If the original poster could please describe the symptoms better we may be able to point you in the correct direction for a fix.
