I'm keeping an eye on the truck during our Christmas trip. My first Blackstone report came back with possible coolant in the oil. I've done several items over the past year so there is no telling what might have happened.
My question is where all can oil and coolant mix? My oil level holds good, and my coolant is clean with no contamination. My coolant level appears to hold good, but with the cold weather and my degas bottle level will move all over from a warm motor to a cool motor to a cold motor.
The fact my oil level isn't moving up or down has eased my anxiety. What does the brotherhood have to say on the matter?
Oil cooler is my first thought as well. Oil typically goes into the coolant because the oil pressure is greater than the coolant pressure while running. Once you shut the warm engine off, the pressure in the coolant system is greater than the oil system. I'm having a hard time figuring a scenario where the coolant gets to the oil, but not oil to the coolant - except for a very rare head gasket issue.
Is this the first time the report has come back with possible coolant contamination? Are you running any oil additives?
A data point of 1 doesn't make the best sample, the real value of a UOA is in the trend. Like others have said usually oil is in the coolant due to the higher operating pressures of the oil. Personally I would watch the level and re-sample after a few thousand miles.
Have you changed injector o-rings or injectors lately? Some times left over coolant will make it there and next oil change the test will come back negative.
It is a sample of one. I typically run ar9100 or the Lucas synthetic oil additive. With my most recent oil change I'm running straight oil, no additive.
I have no signs of oil in the coolant, I thought I did, it was due to a contaminated catch pan in recent work. A new coolant filter cleaned it right up.
I don't see a a change in oil level and I'm now watching the coolant level closely. I'll post my first oil report as soon as I get back home tomorrow.
