First time on the forum,I just bought 1972 highboy. It was a fire department brush truck it has 43k miles run good but has a slight tick. I'm going to 4 barrel carb and intake so I was going to put new lifters in while I have it apart. It's a 360 are the rockers adjustable?
Any way to know if that speedometer reading hasn't been around the world at least once and it's really 143,000?
There are other options for adjustable rockers but they typical aren't very inexpensive. Most of the time the stock "rails" don't give problems for stock set ups. Are you sure it is a lifter tick and not exhaust tick? Those factory manifolds on my engine could tick just like a lifter......might be time for a set of headers.......
It might be a exhaust manifold. I'm changing the intake anyway so I should put new lifters in while its apart. The fire department owned it since it was new and the title has 43k on it and the gauges work so think it's the right miles. Also are 360s known for oil leaks the whole motor wet its hard to tell where it's coming from. For sure the valve covers but it looks to be more places. Thank you for the reply.
Before you start pulling it apart run the engine and pour some transmission fluid in the carburetor and rev it up to keep it from dying out. If it is an exhaust leak you should be able to see the leak around the manifold and kill all the mosquitoes at the same time.
Another way of finding exh leaks is using a length of hose placed around the exhaust manifolds with the other hose end placed up to your ear.
Also old Fe engine that have sat longer then driving yrs. and get gummed up internal have troubles removing the dizzy out of the block.
Twisting back & forth while pulling upwards. Hopefully the oil pump drive rod stays in the pump and not drop in to the pan
