Oil leak when cold

I have a 95 powerstroke as a daily so I realize the common oil leak issues and where to start. Today at work I came in to our 2002 7.3 with a puddle of oil underneath of it. It's a service truck I'm the mechanic and I honestly after filling it could not get it to leak I tried everything. A guy had come in and started it after sitting for the holiday and it sat and idled and leaked probably 2-3 quarts. They shut it down and I came in I added probably 1 1/2 gallons to get it full again. Has almost 300k after I had gotten there they had already warmed the truck up and it had cooled back down. It's coming from the driver side (axle frame rail and leaf spring) are all covered in oil but no obvious signs when shut off idling under load anything of an oil leak. I tried everything to get it to leak and not a drop. Anybody have any suggestions?

Oil cooler would be my first suspect based on what you are describing.

Yup, those are classic signs of oil an cooler needing new o-rings.

Being cold and not started for a few days then first fire after like 4 days? It held good pressure and wouldn't leak again after that.

O-rings can do some strange things. Maybe it isn't the oil cooler, but from your description of the location and the symptoms I would get under there with a flashlight and have a look.

If you find something different, be sure to let us know.

I got under it with a flashlight. The main source of problem from where the leaks were was up by the oil filter but in front of it. But I never actually saw it leak and I couldn't make it leak.. It's really strange and I didn't understand it

When the o-rings get old and brittle, the oil cooler will often leak when cold, and quit leaking as it starts to warm up.

One is right at the red circle, the other is just above the filter on the opposite side of the tube. The tube is held in place by to "mounts" where there are o-rings between the tube and mount. Also, there are gaskets where the mounts meet the block.

So it's probably a real pain in the *** to remove ? Because I looked up there at that and saw an active drop but it was warm so it was from before when it was cold. Is it all that difficult to remove

i seen people do them leaving the front header attached to engine, just prying them out with a prybar, and unbolting the rear of it.

I have heard information ranging from "30 minute job" to "worst fix I have had to do". Although, there is tons of information on it and a couple of videos. The one below is one of the better videos. Most people say that unless the leak is on the front mount, leave it in place and remove the tube and rear mount.

Dont pull the front mount. There is no need to. The video posted above is the way its done. I used dorman seals and the only difference I found between them and oem was the price.

I used a set of Dorman's...lasted 1 year. I recommend pulling the front header, as I think the inside of the header should be cleaned.
