Slop in the linkage and box all adds up check both on the ground and get the front end (safely) off the ground. Have an assistant turn the wheel lock to lock and check to see what parts are loose - drag link, or is the Pittman sluggish? Kingpins? Tie rod ends, etc. Make sure wheel bearings are adjusted correctly too.
My silver 77 F250 had about a 1/4" to 1/2" in the wheel itself and I have to chase that thing all over the road when going to town. But it is acceptable to me because I know the steering box needs replaced.
My question is: "How much play is acceptable in the steering?"
Zero. My 74 F100 has 82k on it and has nearly zero play... new rag joint took care of most of the slop, king pins are tight... I need to replace a couple tie rod ends to tighten it up the rest of the way.
Most parts are readily available and not real expensive, tight steering is a safety issue for me.
