Kinda funny, but my 2015 got caught when new in a regen loop for a bit and because of the smell and lousy mileage I thought it was a stuck caliper too.
Well I went through the entire truck as though a job as possible and nothing to be found. Everyone seems to be going to Regen and that was definitely not Regen. I did check the calipers and there wasn't any sign of any thing but normal wear. Checked all fluids, and air pressures. Tires, drive train, and transmission Still nothing. As much of the top of the motor that I could see had no sign of residue from oil. A little oil on the oil pan but not significant.
I will keep an eye on the truck and if occurrences again I will bring it back to Ford for them to look see.
Crystal I have 62,000 miles now on the truck and still in awe of it's ability.
Just bought my first diesel last week. I have not noticed any regen lights on or anything, but when i got home last night is was around 40 deg out and i noticed a smell coming from the back of the truck and a some fumes coming from under the truck between the cab and the bed. First time i smelled that smell. never owned a diesil before so i dont know what regen smells like and or didnt see any light on in the truck saying it was doing a regen. i was parked at the barn for 30-45 mins with it running while i was out feeding... I was under the truck for 30 mins with it off looking for a leak or any signs of an issue. totally freaked me out! i didnt sleep at all, i am headed to denver thursday with cattle for National Western from Texas and dont need any issues.... didnt look at forums until today or think about the regen until this morning. you guys think it was a regen cycle?

Yes I do. Nothing to worry about. In addition to the "hot" smell, you can literally feel the heat radiating off the DPF tube on the passenger side of the truck. I think it hits 1200F so I wouldn't lay under it when that is going on.
No "light" stays on when regeneration happens, just a brief message "Exhaust Filter Cleaning" which stays on for about 3 seconds. If you have the color message center, the message fills the screen and is in orange.
The 'CLEANING EXHAUST FILTER' light is quick sometimes. It's there, but all too easy to miss. The smell is unnerving, too... but you get used to it. Travel safe.
It doesn't go away, but it gets subdued over time. I never realized how much air the truck pushes up between the cab and the bed until the first time I had snow over the truck... Which explains why we smell that burning smell at that location.
There are monitors that will tell you when you are in "regen" if you really need to know. A couple of ways to go here. a bluetooth OBDII dongle and a smart phone app or a standalone OBD II plug in monitor. (and some programmers too) Edge makes a standalone monitor and a programmer that will work as a monitor too. Amazon sells the dongles and Torque Pro is an example of a smart phone app. There are others out there too. I don't use any of them - even though I have the Dongle. I use it to read codes and perform diagnostic tests - on our trucks Forescan is a good app to use the dongle for that.
You have nothing to worry about, from what you said, all is normal, IMHO too.
