I keep everything perfect maintenance wise, but still was slowly getting less mpg. Did muffler delete and instantly made 4 mpg better, calculated twice. I am back to 18.9 mpg.
Wow, this is encouraging as I am just a couple days away from installing a MBRP 4" turbo back exhaust. An increase of 4 MPG is quite a bit for such a minor change.
I hear that the stock muffler doesn't help the exhaust flow but not to that extent. I installed an MBRP 4" exhaust with muffler and my mileage went up a smidge but nothing to write home about.
If you're going bigger and still have stock injectors, it pays to get a kit that goes from a 3.5 inch downpipe out to either a 4 inch or 5 inch if you desire. It helps the turbo spool and maintains the bottom end power even stock. I'd only run a full 4 inch downpipe if you had Stage 2 or 160/100 injectors and above.

I just installed that 1 on mine....no mileage increase.....
I will run everything stock as long as it continues to work. 300k and 18.9mph is all I want. Thought I would share my success. We did tbe calculations again and we are .157mph difference after 3 times.

I have a 4" downpipe on mine and it b-a-r-e-l-y fits. I don't know how anything bigger fits through there unless it's bent differently. I check mine regularly since it clears the transmission pan, return line, and frame by about 1/4".

Anything above 1500rpm on mine and it becomes noticeable. Get above 2000rpm and the drone drowns out the injector noise.
4" exhaust for me gained my no noticeable improvements besides maybe a small drop in egts. Other then that just A lot louder. If I gained 4 mpg on mine I would have figured a way to install two

What I'm driving at is that a 3.5 inch downpipe fits much better than a 4 inch downpipe. From the 3.5 inch downpipe, you can go 4 or 5 inches the rest of the way, to the back of the truck.
I have a vibration that has popped up lately in my truck. I am thinking the down pipe is rubbing somewhere. Gonna have to try and get a better look. There defiantly isn't much room to squeak a down pipe in there.
I think it's funny every time I hear about the dramatic mpg increase people get with somewhat minor modifications. I went from a bone stock truck to everything in my sig and see next to no increase in mpg.

Maybe a kid had shoved an entire bag of potatoes into his exhaust. I don't doubt that he saw an increase in mileage and that you have not. Each truck is different in their own way, even though they were all built identical rolling off the line. Over the past 16.5-12.5 years they have all been altered, stayed the same, driven, not driven, etc in different ways.
Honestly, I have done a ton of improvements to my truck and frankly don't give a damn if I see a MPG increase. It would take years before that money is recouped simply based on the cost of the modifications/updates. I do know though that the truck is running much better now than ever and it gets the same work done I ask of it much easier than it did the day I bought it.
