I machined a fitting several weeks ago to solder on top of my fuel tank on my '49 F4 to connect diesel return line. I found out today after several failed attempts to solder it on the tank that I had made it out of the wrong material, it wouldn't take solder. I used a scrap of really tough bronze to machine it from but, it would not tin. I guess there is something in the alloy I used that kept contaminating the surface as I heated it.
This is the fitting I machined
This is the base after several attempts to solder. I ended up soldering a 5/16" ferrule coupling into the top of the tank in its place. It soldered fine.
Here is the fitting and the return line installed. I bored the ferrule fitting so the line would slip thru it as I wanted the return line to go almost to the bottom of the tank. I machined the fitting bolted to the side of the tank to hold the line and hose. I will use a bulkhead fitting for the hose to go thru the cab floor. I machined a bulkhead fitting to fit a 3/4" hole in the frame next to the rear running board bracket.
With this fitting I can connect the hose coming thru the floor of the cab with the 5/16" fuel return line from the engine. I will machine a similar fitting to the one bolted to the side of the tank to connect the hose from the under cab fuel filter to the 5/16" supply line to the engine. I want to get the fuel tank and lines installed so I can get the engine running.
Very cool, looks good too. But if you run the line down to the bottom of the tank how can you hear the burbling sound. You know, the sound that makes a guy have to go pee.
