Fuel gauge rises slowly after fill

I have a 2007 F150 XLT with 150K Km. Recently the fuel gauge rises slowly ( 2 start up or 40 minutes of driving ) to the full mark after fill up. The truck is always fueled with Cheveron "regular" gas. What could be the problems ... float, sensor, fuel gauge? and how to check them?

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks,

Peter

You are going to think that this is crazy, but my 2007 f150 did that right after I bought it used in 2008. I took it back to the dealer and they reflashed the PCM and it fixed the problem. I thought it was the fuel sender or guage, but the reflash fixed it.. It still works fine today..

I have some experience with this issue myself. Mine started doing about 15-20K ago. I asked my trusted mechanic and he suggested replacing the float sensor as well as the fuel pump at the same time as a preventative measure. Total cost installed was going to be around $600. I did some research and decided to try a few bottles of Chevron Techron. I was absolutely amazed at the results. It usually corrects the problems within a day or so depending on of course giving it a few days to slosh around in there. I now add it every 5000 miles and that's all I've done to fix mine. I trust my mechanic but for now I'm going to wait until I have fuel pump issues before I drop the tank. I would almost guarantee that this will work for you as I had the exact same symptoms.

Best of luck to you.

I heard about the Tehron but not available in chevron gas station anymore. I use chevron gas all the time and it should contain Tehron for cleaning. Does any one know where to buy Tehron in Surrey, Vancouver, BC area?

Thanks.

The "problem" is that the cluster is still in the default "anti-slosh" mode which can take up to 55 minutes of accumulated operating time to go fully from E to F.

One of the possible causes is sulfur contamination of the in-tank sensor that causes it to read intermittently. If the cluster doesn't receive a valid fuel sender reading within 1 second of powering on, perhaps due to an intermittent sender or sender circuit, it defaults to the anti-slosh even if there was a fill-up event immediately prior.

The only thing Techron, which is available in the US at many auto parts stores, can do is to help clean the sender in case it's contaminated. If the sender wasn't contaminated in the first place, the use of Techron will have no effect on the issue.

I disagree with the anti slosh theory. I had the exact same symptoms and without a doubt it solved my problems. I purchased from either Walmart or an Auto Parts store. I believe his problem is the same as mine but that's just my opinion. I am not saying that the anti slosh information is incorrect though. I just believe it is contamination on the sensor as he noted.

You cannot disagree with that since that's how the system is designed to operate. If there is no valid sensor read within the first second of power-up, then that's the mode the cluster stays in, REGARDLESS OF THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF THE 'NO-READ'. PERIOD.

Is that clear enough?

This happened to me about a month ago after I fueled up.
Searched forums, one guy said all was fine after he disconnected battery for 20 minutes, leaving lights on to drain electronics...
I did that and all was good and it hasn't happened since

One other thing that might be happening is if you leave the key on while fueling. My truck would take forever to get to F on the gauge if the ignition was on, but immediately if the key was off.

Interesting enough mine seems to do the opposite. I always leave mine running and at one time when I shut it off for fueling it was always slow to return to full. Go figure.
