80' F350 time for upgrades, a few questions.

Hello!,

So during my month vacation from school i figured i should do some work on the . It started with a dump run..ended with a Isuzu flat bed (fried the starter wire so it grounded to the engine). After fixing that small issue i started tackling the mess of wires, got that done today. Now its seem to address the elephant in the room with this truck, this includes top end engine work / rear fuel tank reinstall and updating the fuel system.

So first question i was looking at putting a new top end on this old 400 6.6l shes got 162k and still running strong but id like to opt for a weiland action plus intake and upgrade to one of Summit's 4 barrel carbs ~650cfm. As-well as ditching the Duraspark II system this truck has its seems more wires and worries than its worth. Has anyone done this? if so what kind of results?

Second question is the fuel system, so i dropped the rear tank and it was full of lacquer and rusted so i am buying a new one with a new sending unit. I already bought the fuel tank selector valve, the FSV1 (should be wired up tomorrow) however i have considered giving the old fuel pump a break and switch to electric fuel pumps. I'm worried about the dead lift capabilities of the Holley mighty mites's (12 in). I wanted to put the system in this configuration
rear tank-electric pump 1- filter - selector valve w/ front tank - filter - fuel pump 2 - carb
One worried i have is will 2 pumps be too much draw on the truck to run at once? Any ideas are greatly appreciated

Thanks!
Michael

Your fuel pump plans don't make sense. You are worried about the extra wires the DS2 has, and then you are adding all that wiring and extra pumps for the fuel system. You can't beat the old mechanical pump on the engine for simplicity and absence of any wiring for it. It just works.

The carb and intake will be a nice upgrade if you don't have underhood inspections.

I wouldn't trust an aftermarket electronic fuel pump as far as I could throw it. Can't beat a GOOD mechanical fuel pump.

Mechanical fuel pumps are great as long as you don't run out of gas.
If you do, prime the carb through the bowl vent so you don't burn up the starter trying to get fuel.

I'm on pump #3 with over 400k on my truck.
It's a simple and very reliable system.
