Quick help requested in identifying an AWD Explorer
Since I totaled my '03 XLT, I'm on the hunt now for it's replacement. I'm looking at getting another 3rd gen and I've seen a few listed on the local/area CL in my price range.
I'm seeing one in particular that's really catching my eye...it's a 2003 Eddie Bauer and in the ad, it's listed as being 4WD. However, one of the interior pictures that shows the radio/AC stack with the buttons surrounding the radio shows only the Message Center buttons on the left. The right buttons are blank.
Could this Explorer be AWD instead of the 4x4? How could I tell...any door tag codes or VIN codes to look for? Or just crawl underneath and look for the transfer case?
That would be the easiest thing to do. That's a good price considering what we paid for a 2002 sport track with slightly higher miles and some mild rocker panel rust that I need to jump on before it gets out of control.
I'm not sure what vehicle age ranges this works for, but if you can get the VIN and works with the below link, it should help you decipher if it's AWD or 4WD. If 4WD you'd better ask about the missing buttons.
Thanks guys. I found a VIN decoder sheet and brought that along today. I peeked underneath first and didn't see a transfer case, then checked the VIN...it was only 2WD.
Other things were wrong too but the lack of 4x4 is a deal-breaker for me.
