Vapor coming out of valve cover when I pulled oil cap

Hey guys, just wondering if this is normal. I drove my truck around for a bit too pick up some parts and oil, so the engine was hot when I pulled off the oil cap to do an oil change. A light misty vapor was coming out. The oil smelled a little burned, very lightly. The oil that came out was not milky. But I was just wondering if vapor was a normal thing.

Totally normal. Some use that vapor as a crude determination of how much blow by a diesel has. You'll always have some, but if it blows the oil fill cap off when ever you put it upside down, over the hole, whenever the engine is running, that's a very good sign that that engine is junk.

Good news! I just did that, flipped my cap and it didn't move. Perfect! Thanks for the reassurance.
