With trucks is there a transmission that can be used instead of an E4OD. Building a hot rod one can use a 747 trans coupled to a Chevy or a Turbo 400 to a Ford with adapter plates. How about OBS trucks?
I wrote before I did some searching... Here's what I found at Dieselstop.com
The Allison will bolt up if you switch to the Commercial 7.3 Bell Housing like the MD 7.3s used. You can find them used for around $300 used.
You would need a GM transfer case (use the 261) as the spline count is different than the Ford.
You would need a 7 position gear selector.
You would need to adjust your driveline lengths.
You would need the TCM from an Allison that matched that tranny. TCM is the computer.
You would need to build a simple wiring harness and tie into a 12V source, the TPS, on/off brake light for unlocking the TC under hard stops, and ignition.
You would need the commercial flywheel and crank drive hub.
And the only hard part, you have to find someone who can reprogram the TCM to work w/ your motor. There is a dude in Indiana that does it and a guy in CA I think.
It is a MUCH better tranny than what we have and for around 3K you can build it up w/ a Suncoast kit and it would be bad.
Personally I'd have to have the 6 speed double OD version although you can convert the old 5 speeds to a 6 speed for about $1600.
My current truck will be my last automatic truck. LOL.
It all sounds great but some of the conversions cost upwards of $12,000. That's a bit out of reach for me. I like my truck but not that much.
I'm with you!!! Next truck will be a stick. Hmmm what does it take to change it over$
