I have a 74 f250 with a c6 trans , I want to swap it out for a 4 or 5 speed to improve my mph. It has a 360 moter now , I also want to put a np205 behine the new trans instead of a divorced np2o8 or np203 (the stamp is not clear)
Stating the obvious here, but you're going to need a tranny that has been married to a transfer case already, unless you want to tear it down.
5 speed:
Zf-5, im not sure which bell pattern the FE engines used, but i think it shared the small block pattern. Great strong tranny with a low first.
NV4500, i believe you can take it to a machine shop to get the proper bell pattern. No personal experience, but a lot of people like them.
4 speed:
t-18/19, borg warner tranny with granny gear. The 19 has a syncronized first, making it popular. Very strong tranny that has been used in large trucks.
Np-435, granny gear, non syncronized first. Very popular, very strong. Also used in large trucks.
These are all manual. I dont think you could get a 5 speed auto that will fit. And the E4OD is the only 4 speed auto that will fit, i believe. Also, i think the E4OD requires a computer. But im not sure, as i dislike the autos, so i havent looked into it.
360 uses an fe bellhousing only. Think with a dodge nv4500 you can get an adapter from Advanced adapters to bolt to the fe bellhousing. A dodge one has the right spline count and shaft length for an fe.
Or you can go np435/t18 since that is the 4 sp from the factory, can do it all with factory parts.
Do you want to go to a married tranfercase or stick with a divorced?
Id stick with the divorced and just swap in a 205, your current one is a 203.
If you go to a married setup, you will need new drive shafts and probably a different transfer case mount.
If you stick with divorced, your small driveshaft will need shortend. You need a 2wd tranny, but also the mount for your transfer case shifter is special and and bolts to the tranny.
And more than likely the only way to increase your fuel mileage is with a 5sp. all the 4sp have 1 to 1 final ratio same as your c6, need and overdrive to really help with mpg
Best bet would be to find a whole parts truck with the setup you want. Its easier than piecing it all together.
