possible solution to studdering or cold starting problems
I had a 89' 300 l6 that ran perfect. I mean with the engine idling and the hood up, it ran as smooth as if it was off. Then one cool morning it didn't want to run. It would try to run, misfire a little, but would cut right back off. After restarting many times it finally took off, and was fine as normal. As soon as it cooled down again, the same thing happend. After many attempts to fix it ,replacing sensors, ignition module, cap, rotor, coil, plug wires, plugs, fuel pressure regulator, filter, and pulling codes, which returned no results. The only thing left was the pick up coil inside the distributor. Naturally the last place i would look would be the problem. Turns out that all the starting attemps would warm the thing up to expand the bad connection inside. I hope my trial and error experience can help save someone a headache. Though changing the thing is not easy, as you have to disassemble the distributor to get it out. In the end, was back to normal, except for the expensive tune up it got in the process.

You have to pull the distributor to get to the PIP, but it's not hard. The most difficult part is getting the distributor gear back on with the holes for the roll pin lined up.
