Question Expedition Message Center upgrade

Expedition Message Center upgrade

I have a 99 Expedition XLT that doesn’t have the message center in the overhead console. This is a feature I liked, but didn’t want to spend the $4K for the EB edition.

My question is that since a number of EB have met their demise and are currently residing in junkyards, is it possible for me to transplant the message center from one of them into my XLT? If so, who has done it and what parts should I be asking for from the junkyard? My manual refers to a compass sensor module as the only unique input to the message center. Is it an integral component or a separate item?

Any assistance or input as to feasibility is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

If this has already been discussed, please let me know where - I couldn't find it using the search function - thx

Adding an Information center module (Overhead Trip Computer) - yes, it can be done but it is not a simple plug & play modification. I am afraid that like my XLT, your vehicle is not going to be equipped with the necessary wiring that would allow you to simply plug in an OTC module. You can verify this by looking behind the kickpanel in the passenger seat footwell where you will find a black, 16-pin connector. If the black 16-pin connector only has 5 or 6 wires in it, the only way you are going to be able add an OTC is by removing the dash panel assembly so that you can tap into numerous points in the instrument panel wiring harness in order to get the required signals that the OTC needs in order to work properly. I have managed to acquire all of the required parts through salvage yards but to be perfectly honest, even though I have removed the instrument panel in my Miata more than once, I have not yet allocated the time to it in the Ex. In this case, I think it is due to the increased complexity that is involved in removing the dash - more time consuming than anything else! I imagine that it is definitely a full weekend project!
