The only thing powertrain item to watch for is the shape of the automatic transmission, check the fluid color, that will give you an idea of its condition. If you find a 5 speed then you're just looking at condition of electronics, wiring, maintenance, etc. I recommend a diesel, more power and better fuel economy. However you can't really go wrong with a 351 either.

Everything from a half ton other than rolling gear and manual transmissions will interchange.

The dana 60 in the front of the f350 is considered superior to the twin traction beam of the f250.
The only downfall isvthey sit a little higher, if you call that a downfall.

these 5.8's can develop an exhaust tick ... a small leak at the exhaust manifold which sounds an awful lot like a noisy lifter or the beginning of a bottom end problem. so if you hear that when you are out shopping don't immediately write it off. mine has been ticking for 3 years now .

Same thing with my 5.8, it has sounded that way for as long as I can remember. And it's been in the family for over 15 years.

I don't think there were and F-350 Super Cabs either, so if you are looking for a Super Cab the solid D60 is out (except as a swap).

And "Super Cab" is the Ford term. "Extended Cab" is GM.

Well I would like to get the super cab but what I'd love to find is a 5.8 crew cab 4x4 f250 but I can't seem to find a crew cab that isn't either a 7.5 gas or 7.3 diesel, diesel just doesn't make sense for me to own I've got a Dailey driver car so this is just for driving on the really bad days of snow when front wheel won't cut it, that and for getting parts trucks and run to lowes......oh and my first reason just for my enjoyment when I get sick of driving a car every day.

I'm pretty sure the F-250 crew cab short box only came with a 460 or a diesel (in '95 - '97 only too). If you want a 351 crew cab you need to go up to an F-350, which means it will be a long bed. And even then 351 crew cabs were rare, but at least they do exist.

Welcome to the forums. Do everyone a favor and let us know where you live without having to look up your profile... just click User CP > Edit your details, then go down to where it says Additional Details and type in your state where it says "where you live". Then it'll show up with every post like you see in mine at the top.

Anyhow you're in New York so you'll want to watch for rust and rot in the radiator support, cab corners, wheel arches, and of course check the condition of the frame and the hard lines that run under it for brake, fuel, etc.

What do you plan on using the truck for? What are your expectations? That would help make sure won't be disappointed with the one you have in mind.

i guess i plan on using it to get to work in the winter time i have to get up and leave a little after 5:00am and i live in poorly maintained roads during bad storms so front wheel drive car gets dicey even with some good hankook ipikes. trying to get up long hills covered with deep snow can be difficult when it starts spinning your s.o.l so thats part of my motivation.
then i can never get anything home and im always going to the junkyard, tractor supply, lowes, and dad and i have some small tractors we'd like to take back and forth to a friends farm, i have a 8n id like to tow. maybe grab firewood now and then too. nothing to kill the truck. i cant go with the 460 because we live about 25 miles from stores so 50 miles round trip doing that 2-3 times a week would be expensive and the 7.3 diesel im just not interested in i think just because of the cost of parts, turbo, injection pump ect, plus it can get to -20 so i dont want to deal with the gelling and cold weather issues of a diesel. what you thinking?
