Coolant won't drain

So, I went and bought the stuff to test my coolant myself figuring it would be something I could do myself pretty easy. I tested the reservoir on the driver's side and things went well. I went to test the other reservoir and couldn't get the syringe hose in it. No problem, I will just drain some coolant out of the bottom.

Now, no matter what I do, I can't get a drop of coolant out of either radiator through the drain valves. I have taken the caps off and started the motor...still not a drop. Anyone have any ideas?

My next step is to take it to the dealership and pay them to test it after spending $112 on the testing supplies.

Test from the degas bottle for the primary and the reservoir for the secondary.

Sorry I am not educated on the coolant system of the truck. What is the degas bottle? Is the large white reservoir on the driver's side the primary system?

Instructions on one of the kits says to check from the radiator not the reservoir.

Yes, on a diesel that bottle is called a degas bottle. It is NOT an overflow but it is part of the coolant system so you can test from there. The coolant in the degas circulates with the system.

FYI, not sure where you are but in a lot of areas the dealer will test it for free since if you fail they are pretty sure you are going to do the flush/fill with them.

1st. Did you turn the valve 180°? The valves turn 90° real easy, AND then they cam out and turn another 90° for a total of 180° before they will drain.

If you only turned the valve 90°, it has not cam'd out of the valve body and has not even started to open yet.

2nd. The instruction say to test from the coolant system and to test at ambiant temps. Most dealers pull your truck in and test a hot system that you just drove and they pull from the Degas bottle. Either I should pay too much attention to the free coolant checks that dealers do, or I should worry too much doing coolant checks if nobody follows the instructions.

The most important part of the coolant check is making sure you have no nitrites in your coolant. And if YOU KNOW that nobody has topped off your coolant with another type of coolant. There should be no nitrites. Nitrites come from somebody using the old style ( Non-OAT based) coolant in the 6.7L engine. If you have nitrites you need to flush and refill.
