got the perches welded on , measured about 100 times , finally decided 9 11/16 from center of perch to inside of flange was dead on . After measuring the 78 and the 68 rear ends I came to realize ford didn't weld stuff up 100% in correct position . here's the pictures .

After tack welding perches on , I used 2 digital angle meters to make sure perches were even side to side . one side was off so broke tack and fixed 10.40-10.35 acceptable to me

Yeah staying with 28 spline , I was hoping to get lucky and find a 31 spline .
My pockets aren't deep enough to justify the added expense of 31 spline .

I realize you've ordered the 28-spline differential but, a pair of wrecking yard Dentside 31-spline axles can be had for around $35-$50.00 each.

31-spline axles will be around 30% stronger than 28. Having beefier parts is more desirable but the 28-spline Dentside axles will hold up to the same use/load you've always put on the truck.

Unless you're doing something majorly different with your truck, after the rear end swap, it should be fine.

10-4.... it's all good. Gonna detail the rear axle? As an ode to originality, I shot the pumpkin with red oxide primer... I skipped new copper washers.

The purpose of the copper crush washers is for added sealing around the housing-to- 3rd member studs (helps seal against the gear oil from seeping out from around the studs). 3/8" I.D. brake hose washers will work for this application.

Many people, because they don't know what they do, don't replace the gaskets between the axle housing flange and the back of the backing plate and between the front of the backing plate and the 4-bolt stamped steel axle retainer. Their purpose is to keep the small particles of abrasive brake shoe dust from working their way into the axle bearings.

Pebbles gets maybe 500 miles a year put on her , so I figured 29 spline would be fine . Plus Local yards were empty of bumps and dents had to take what i could find .

I admire all your hard work and looks nice by the way. I am going to just add 1.5 inch wheel spacers on mine for now at least. I checked on getting a rebuilt rear end from a 78 with new gears posi and all new bearings and seals and they want $2500 bucks. Mine wont be a daily driver.
