Camper-van Ideas
No cooking inside the van, easy access to our food when camped, and everything stored when on the road. We like to be able to pull into a truck stop and get some sleep without rearranging everything in the van, and with the size of our extended E350, a permanently made bed became an option. And since we dry camp in the desert often, a port-a-potty is a must.
So with those clear directives, I got started. After removing the 4 rows of seats, here’s the Bed area during construction. I purchased 2" of dense foam and 2" of memory foam to combine for a mattress.
Lots of storage under that big bed, with the back 4 feet accessible through the rear doors, and the front 2 feet accessible through a lift up lid and/or a window to pull stuff out the front between the seats when the bed is occupied. View through side door with newly relocated back seats, before the food cabinet and fridge was installed. During travel the port-a-potty straps in between the 2 rear seats. At camp the port-a-potty moves over behind the drivers seat.
The food storage cabinet under the Engel fridge has LED lighting inside, and an auxiliary power port facing the door. Behind it is the camp kitchen in its travel position, strapped in behind the drivers seat. With 100W Renogy Solar Panel on the roof, and 2) 110AH Deep Cycle batteries mounted to the frame the Engel fridge can run 24/7 indefinitely. In my VW with the same setup it was left on year round. When camping the passenger seat slides forward another 6 inches, which allows the cabinet to slide forward as well, leaving more room in the doorway.
Renogy Solar Controller and accessory Outlet. Switches control under side step LED strip, and 2 extra switches for future awning LED strip lighting. Mounted behind the panel is a 6 fuse block, powered from the aux batteries.
Our first camping trip in this van. Compared to our little VW Vanagon we previously camped in, this thing has so much room it's embarrassing. On a side note, my little VW Vanagon inspired my friend to build this Big Red E350 7.3L 4x4 to camp in, which in turn inspired me to start my E350 project.
The camp kitchen in use with top slid over to expose the Coleman Stove/Grill. The large bottom drawer houses stackable pots/pan, a collapsible silicone large mixing bowl, a Keurig French Press, a Collapsible Silicone Teapot, Cutting board and Plates. It is extremely handy to have all cooking utensils, spices, etc right below the Coleman.
We still have a few modifications to make. An awning with LED lighting for sure. Storage inside rear doors and front side door. The rearmost side door will get a shallow cabinet.
And I'm pondering ideas for a removable 3rd bucket seat between the 2 rear ones to up my seating to 5 people when not in camping mode. And perhaps under the van water storage. It's a fun obsession.
