Head

Why the hell is it so hard to line up a head gasket and head on a 93 ford f 150 inline six?

I don't know. Maybe if you're still working on it, get a couple long bolts the correct size and threads that will still stick up over the top of the head when installed, and cut the heads off and maybe even grind a taper on top. Put the bolts in good places that should line you up.

On second thought that may not work as the bolts will too long. Plan 2 get some bolts that just stick up a little ways and cut the heads off and hacksaw a screwdriver slot in the top. When you get the gasket and head and a couple of the head bolts in place, take a screwdriver and turn the bolts out and take a magnet and carefully remove the bolts.

Should be dowel pins, one front one rear to line up the gasket on.

They can and do lift out when removing the head then fall off, can and will drop into cylinder too.

Perhaps if you'd expand on and clarify the question a tad?

Ok, there is nothing to hold the gasket in place while put the head on the block, is there some kind of gasket sealer I should use because there are only the dowel rings which aren't very big, they stick out about a 16th of an inch

Pull the alignment dowels up a little bit more proud of the deck, should be more than enough to hold the gasket in place plus engage with the head itself.

They'll drift were needed from there as you put the head on (doubt it but just be sure not seized in the bore, both head and block clear/clean) and no as stated don't use sealer of any kind on the head gasket.

Thought that might be the issue, didn't think the pins could drop down too far but has been years since I had the head off a straight 6.
