I am in the process of replacing the head gaskets on a '92 Aerostar 8/91 model and was wondering if the original bolts are TTY or can they be reused? If not, can I get from McMaster Carr?Size and type?
Let us know how it goes? What problems you run to in geting to the bolts & fuel injector connections? Are you pulling the heads off with the block in the van? Thanks.

Both have been pressured tested and shaved. It is a tedious job, but really no problems if you take your time. Guess the hardest part was the fuel injector harness .... it goes EVERYWHERE. Maybe I'm just being overly cautious about the head bolts but this "torque to yield" issue is a concern. I'm fairly sure they are not TTY bolts ... the repair book I have makes no mention of NOT reusing the bolts. Local Ford dealers do not keep them in stock or have just a few which further confirms.
My main issue with home repair and this van is the oil pan removal. The engineer who designed that part should be taken out, stood against a wall and .... .
I would replace the head bolts. I htink the 2.8thru 4.o engines require new headbolts. My 89 Bronco II with 2.9. When I do my 4.0 Aerostar I will replace them. Was the intake manifold gasket leaking oil internally ? I heard that is a problem on the v6s because of a poorly designed gasket. How long did it take to get the heads off? Thanks
I have two factory service manuals and they both say to replace the head bolts so it sounds like they are torque to yield. So much for McMaster Carr. The fact that the dealership doesn't stock them doesn't surprise me - dealerships don't keep much stock these days (at least not in the Seattle area, anyways). If you're going to go through all that effort, you might as well play it safe and replace the bolts.
