Dude put a couple RF chokes on there before something bad happens. Hit Radio Shack on the way home before dark and worry no more.
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but if you want to stick with OE size halogen lamps, putting together a relay harness to power the lamps will give you more light too. Especially with the "higher output" halogens. The stock wiring is small gauge and has a long run, a recipe for voltage drop. But if the stock wiring is used only as a switch to trigger relays governing a short length of 10 gauge wire from battery to lamp you'll get more power to the lamps. Put a fuse on that of course. I made one for my 75 F250 based on drawings found on FTE. Search "brighter brights, whiter whites" or something like that. I recently bought a harness off Amazonk for the wife's Subie and was disappointed with the quality. First time I ever soldered was that F250 project and the home built harness is the way to go.
FWIW DDM now incorporates RF chokes in their entry level HID kits, and use fancy schmancy ballasts that claim to not need them on their deluxe kits. Technology marches on.
So I got rid of the H ID lights, and I put a new cable and rotary switch on my DP tuner.
I have a early had any trouble with it since I did that no stumbling or anything, only one time that I can remember. But it's nothing like it was before just randomly cutting out and turning back on.
What seems to work best for my truck is to put it in stock settings before I start it COLD. Otherwise if I leave it in the high position and start it COLD it doesn't run smoothly. So I put it in stock and it starts and runs great while it's warming up. Otherwise if I leave it in high position start it and try to switch it after it's running it will kind of stumble and smoke and stuff. After it's warmed up it will start and run in any position just fine
I'm not saying I can't start it in high position I'm just saying that it's a lot better in stock
I have started in 80 eco since I put in the DP several years ago. The only time I run stock is smog time. Have never heard that DP says to start in stock tune....
I start my Hydra in whatever tune it was in when I turned it off.
I really do like the Fast Idle tune for winter
I do the same. I have zero problems starting the truck in any mode, but I have GearHead tune like ExPACamper but in a different configuration I am sure.
1. DD\Tow
2. High Idle
3. Heavy Tow
4. Street Muscle (never used this tune)
5. Stock
6. No Start
You can start in any tune, but it's recomemded to start in stock tune. This is more for cold climate guys I'd bet, but that's what they say. That's why I said he has other problems as well. I believe DP has the timing moved up as well, that's why the louder sound when switched from stock tune. I haven't noticed any higher ICP at idle with my scan gauge, and that's what some people have said causes the louder sound. Change the timing on an IDI 7.3 and your know what I'm talking about.
alright guys last night was the last straw i kicked the lights on and instead of just bogging down the truck she just shut off but restarted fine. now i know im going to start a war again and please all im doing asking for help i do not need to know how the lights are horrible or a full essay on why they are not legal or why you personally do not like them. but i am looking at led headlights. has anyone had any experience with them and if so what are the advantages and disadvantages? and im not talking the 5 dollar pep boy led lights. i have seen the leds for about 250 for both. I will get a website. I am sorry in advance for sounding like an a**hole but I dont want a war i just want help.
Thank you,
AJ
I know im a month late to the this HID party you had going on here, but just a thought. Are you using or thought about using a HID relay kit? I just ordered some 6000k HIDs and was thinking about it. I might not need it because im running a dual alternator setup on my F250, and the relay kit is mainly for any electrical issues your HIDs might come across like too much voltage pull, too little voltage draw, if you have other high output devices, like stereos, or even car pcm with power draw issues. Just my .02

i would think under 10 degrees is cold enough to be considered a cold climate.
my 02 starts much better under 20 degrees set in 80 econo that it does in stock.

I don't think it's a system load issue as much as it is radio frequency (RF) interference. These trucks weren't designed with the HID systems in mind so shielding and the RF put out by the system weren't taken into consideration. Most of the issues I've read about deal with those that have chips installed but there have been some other random items that I've come across when I researched upgrading my lights. After reading about these issues (I'm not interested in putting a bunch of magnets on my chip cable), along with the fact that the CA vehicle code does not allow me to legally change lighting systems (the thought of having to explain that ticket to my wife is not very appealing), and I don't think there's enough reward for the risk. I went the safe route and bought 2005 lights and will install them when I can find a day to cut up the header panel to install them.
Anything is going to be an improvement over what I've got. The HID and LED light output is great but I've left my young days behind me and am happy to go with a reliable system that I know works.
Why not install new/better bulbs and a direct battery/relay harness? It may not be as bright as an HID setup, but will be a dramatic improvement while maintaining your legal status.
There is a discussion going on about this install right now. Just click here!
