Hi all, we just bought a 1998 explorer sport at an auction. When we got home we realized the headlights/running lights didn't work. (park lights tail light etc.. all work fine) headlight indicator on dash was on. We found that the bulbs had been unplugged. We plugged them back in and all worked. (kinda figured we were gonna have light problems) The Truck sat for about 6 hours when we went out to start it battery was dead. I read some of the posting on the DRL problems of lights not going out, but the lights didn't stay on when you turn everything off. We unplugged the lights again and let the truck sit. Battery was dead again in the morning (may not have let it charge long enough night before, but shut it down for a bit and it restarted). Put it on charger and battery charged and fired up within 1/2 hour. Any ideas? Thanks in advance..Sharon
Sounds like the DRL module alright. I also have a 1998. When mine failed (in the parking lot at work) the headlights stayed on and the high-beam indicator stayed on. Luckily I discovered it before the battery went down. I found that disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, then reconnecting it, prevented the headlights from coming on, but the defective DRL still pulled a few amps, enough to drain a battery overnight. I guess unplugging the headlights was a quick & easy way around it.. A new DRL module is about $100 from the dealer. It's a little black box, located behind the front bumper, just ahead of the drivers front tire. Good luck.
Thanks for the info. We assumed that was our problem as it seems to be a pretty common one. If that is the only bug we find that is great. thanks again Sharon
guess I jumped the gun on that, the truck fired up this morn, but 2 hours later went to take it out of garage and it was dead. when pulled lights on this morning to see if they were working must have drained the last of the battery. Did kinda wonder why the DLR. Dim and Bright lights all seemed the same brightness. Will have to keep trying. Open to any suggestions anyone may have.
Thanks
Ack ! Now I feel partly responsible... Make sure all your battery stuff is OK; (connections are clean & tight, water level is up). Make sure the alternator is charging and the battery is holding the charge. Chances are, the previous owner had similar problems (due to the defective DRL module) and the battery may have been drained and recharged so many times that is no longer able to hold a full charge. Good Luck.
Not to worry, we checked all that out and battery is taking a charge, alternator is working fine. everything is great as long as the lights are unplugged. We think the vehicle may have been a repo as we found an alarm with no speaker no remote and what looks like command start with no remote. (you take your chances at auction) and we have a neighbour with a friend who specializes in electonics (for the other guys, but should be bascially the same) so he is willing to come over and go through the electonics for us, which under the circumstances is probably a good thing. Thanks muchly for the help will let you know what we find out.
