First of all this question is not about a truck. But I do own an 11 f150 eco screw that is awesome. My main interest is Mustangs. I have a custom 92 gt. I have poor coolant circulation and need some help from the sbf gurus. The engine is a H.O., it has E7 heads, H.O. intake and is date coded to be correct for a fox Mustang. It has a front cover with a dipstick hole on the right and mechanical fuel pump block off plate on the left. Today I pulled the water pump thinking the pump was bad. To my eyes it looks fine and is the correct reverse rotation one for a 92 5.0 Mustang. So since I have an older style standard rotation front cover should I use a water pump for a early 80s Mustang? Will my stock fan bolt up? Will the a/c and p/s brackets work? I really don't want to change the front cover to the correct one if I don't have to. Any help would be great.
If your engine has the stock serpentine belt setup, you need a reverse rotation pump. If you use the reverse rotation pump, then you need the matching cover behind it. I heard of some universal covers that will accept both types of pumps, but I don't think they flow as well for either type.
The stock front cover on my 1987 Mustang GT (5.0 HO) has a closed off housing behind the mechanical fuel pump mounting boss. As such, it does not need a block off plate. And it does not have a dip stick in it; that is for an older engine design.
Just curious, does your engine have a boss for the dip stick on the driver's side of the block skirt, like most 1982 and later models?
The serpentine set up seems to be right for the car. The front cover I have has the dip stick tube opening on the right but its filled with sealant. Also on the left it has a block off plate bolted to the cover. Block is E7TE casting and has E7 heads and H.O. intake. Yes dipstick is in left side of block mid head or so as it should be. If I get the correct front cover should my current brackets and such work? I have not dealt with this type of thing before and don't want to spend a bunch of cash. So the water pumps that are designed to work with both types are not so good?
If you get the correct front cover, it should should work properly with the accessories, assuming you still have the original bolts and brackets designed for your vehicle. You might want to visit your local salvage yard to look for an engine of that vintage in a similar vehicle. The 87-93 v8 Mustangs should be plentiful. You can pull the cover, brackets, and all the different bolts and studs that hold them in place. There are at least 9 different bolt sizes, some with double shanks, so grab them all.
The reverse turning water pump is correct for the serpentine belt setup. But a standard or universal cover will not flow as well as one designed specifically for the reverse turning pump.
Well last night I put the new water pump on and filled the coolant. I let it warm up and drove it around some. The heat was hot and the temp gauge got to a mark or 2 below normal. I just replaced the thermostat with a stock 195. I'm gonna run it like this for awhile and keep an eye on things. If the front cover didn't have the dipstick hole in it, it seems to be the same as an 87 mustang. Idk, thanks for your help. Also junk yard around here don't have foxbody mustangs...
